FAR update

05th August 2021

Please be aware of the following information on the Firearms Registry website.

The Firearms Registry is aware that due to the ongoing pandemic and evolving circumstances, some licence holders may find it difficult to comply with their participation requirements given stay-at-home orders, self-isolation, quarantine or even due to a reluctance to congregate.

Any club member - whether a sports target (pistol or longarm), hunting or collecting – needing to undertake participation activities do not have to do so while clubs and ranges are closed due to the health situation in NSW. To support this:

  • The Firearms Registry does not propose to revoke a licence on the basis that a licence holder cannot fulfil their participation requirements due to self-isolation, lockdown, quarantine, concerns about congregating due to COVID or club/range closure due to the health situation in NSW.
  • Licence holders in this situation do not need to notify the Firearms Registry on this matter.

Clubs may also wish to consider options for the future, such as:

  • Virtual activities as alternatives to the club conducting shooting activities, for example, a shooting activity may include conducting training activities via Zoom or other videoconferencing options. Training activities could include demonstrations of shooting styles, information about the range/club, or information on firearm regulations. While the legislative requirement is that the training is conducted at the range, it can be met if the trainer broadcasts from the range.
  • Hunters and collectors may be able to conduct meetings via Zoom

The Firearms Registry will require your annual compliance reports, at the completion of your annual compliance period. Please ensure that you correctly indicate if a member has been compliant/non-compliant with their participation requirements as this is important for our data. However, as indicated above, we do not propose to revoke licences on this basis until the health situation has eased.

We thank you for your ongoing support and patience during these difficult times. Keep safe and take care,
